On May 18 we celebrated the start of Withrow Market’s 7th season. The weather was good, then great, and the community came out in droves! The first fresh Ontario produce stars were flying off the farmers’ tables, and there was a yummy selection of prepared foods. Our special guests included Cherry Street Cats, Young Urban Farmers and Cultivate Toronto, the Riverdale Meadow Community Garden, Toronto Master Gardeners, a Cookbook Swap done in collaboration with the Riverdale Arts & Letters Club, free bike tune-ups (that kept the mechanics super busy) with Ward 29 Bikes and Ward 30 Cycling Group, and our artistic neighbours Barbara Showler-Lewis and Ecofinery (jewellery), and Catherine Thomas (reclaimed wood bird houses). Councillor Paula Fletcher’s office donated a truck-load of compost, which gardeners eagerly scooped up, reducing a mountain to an ant hill by the end of the day. The Riverdale Horticultural Society donated ornamental plants to the market for sale, the proceeds of which will be put towards a new tent top. We also hosted our first (and their second) Clothing Repairathon, which kept volunteers busy past market closing.
